music mommas

6 Sep

i’m just squeaking this one in. been with family for the last 4 days. which to be honest has been great, mixed with oh god i guess i have to come out to a few people. my best friend from high school came into town as well and we were reminiscing, got me thinking about the first c.d. i ever owned. consequently one of the first concerts i ever went to, where i became more acquainted to said best friend.

tori amos’s crucify- ep in 1994

so i asked my mom and dad to buy this c.d. for me. mom really hesitated because apparently the back of the c.d. shows onions growing or something vegetable like, which also looked quite phallic. this gave my sweet mother pause as to whether or not she should be buying her young, innocent (true at the time) daughter a c.d. with a song entitled crucify and a dick on the back. fortunately she bought it. i’m pretty sure that c.d. shaped my music tastes for much of my life. i wore that c.d. out. and as a virtuous mormon girl the lyrics to crucify got my wee brain thinking about…..alternatives.

Every finger in the room
Is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
Then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
Figures that my courage would choose to sell our now
I’ve been looking for a savior in these dirty streets
Looking for a savior beneath these dirty sheets
I’ve been raising up my hands
Drive another nail in
Just what God needs
One more victim

Why do we
Crucify ourselves
Every day
I crucify myself
Nothing I do is good enough for you
Crucify myself
Every day
And my heart is sick of being in chains

seriously, have you seen this woman play?  because it’s pretty amazing. and again when i first saw her play i was 17 years old. it changed my world to see a woman up there sort of grinding on her piano bench, belting out these incredibly beautiful lyrics. i continue to be an school fan of tori. her new stuff i’m just not familiar with, but those first few albums were the soundtrack of my life.
